¡RETO CUMPLIDO! LOS 4 INKANSABLES LOGRARON RECORRER 340 KM POR LA EDUCACIÓN DE MÁS DE 4,500 NIÑAS

CARE PERÚ ORGANIZED AND HELD RUNNING CHALLENGE IN FAVOR OF THE EDUCATION OF MORE THAN 4,500 GIRLS IN RURAL AREAS

On January 22th, 23th, and 24th, the Challenge for Education was held, led by CARE Peru and the Inkansables Organization. Cecilia Malasquez, Javier Kanashiro, Lucy Mejía, and Stalin Carrasco     , the 4 athletes of Inkansables, ran 340 km for the education of more than 4,500 girls.

Un an attempt to innovate our ways of raising awareness and funds in favor of education in rural áreas, we designed a running challenge with4 athletes, members of the “Inkansables Organization (which translates to “tireless”)”. Originally, we planned to initiate the challenge in Lima and run to Huaytará, Huancavelica, covering 340km (211 miles) and celebratin the birthplace of our beloved Project “Niñas con Oportunidades”, and education and empowerment project for girls in rural áreas. However, due the COVID -19 crisis and new restrictions in the country (Perú), we had to adapt fast! We challenged our tirelles atheletes to run the same distance, this time around iconic running areas of Lima.

For 3 days, the athletes were accompanied by Pablo Ostolaza and Marco Lari, founders of the Inkansables Organization, who ensured the well-being and proper performance of the athletes. Athletes ran in pairs; on the first day, they departed from El Pentagonito, in San Borja, where they ran      a total of 126 km. On the second day, the 4 athletes ran throughout the Costa Verde, passing through the districts of Chorrillos, Barranco, Miraflores, San Isidro, and Magdalena del Mar, reaching a total of 124 km. On the last day, the athletes ran the last 90 km, departing from El Malecón Cisneros, in Miraflores.

“I run for the benefit of the girls of Huaytará, for a better future, for a better education and equality for all the girls in my country,” said Cecilia Malasquez, athlete of Inkansables. Javier Kanashiro added: “Care Peru’s work to empower women through education is incredible.      I had never run for a cause like this, and I am happy to have done so.”

The #RetoPorLaEeducación, promoted by CARE Peru’s “Niñas con Oportunidades” project and the Inkansables Organization, was born to raise      visibility and awareness of the importance of empowering women and contributing to initiatives that promote their development and comprehensive education, working alongside the Ministry of Education.

Niñas con Oportunidades

Since 2016, CARE Peru has been developing the “Niñas con Oportunidades” project (which translates to “Girls with Opportunities”), which seeks to ensure that students from rural areas in Huancavelica, Amazonas, Lambayeque, and Cajamarca, complete high school in a timely age, with life skills and entrepreneurial approach.

“Through this project, we are looking for girls and women to have the same opportunities as men, to be prepared to face life. To do so, we work on strengthening their entrepreneurship skills, which benefits not only women and girls themselves, but also their families and communities”, said Marilú Martens, National Director of CARE Perú.

Throughout the school year, girls learn about citizenship and socio-emotional skills, comprehensive sex education, and economic empowerment. So far, 4,500 students have benefited, but much remains to be done. That is why, from CARE Peru, we encourage the donation of private, public, and civil society companies, so that together, we continue to collaborate and work in favor of more girls in rural areas and the possibility of changing their future.
